Spare Change…See how it ADDS UP!

All of us accumulate spare change almost everyday.  Just by going about our daily routines, we undoubtedly end up with spare change when we empty our pockets at the end of the day.

Just for fun, we decided to start saving this change for one month by putting it aside each day to see how much it would amount to at the end of 30 days.  Well, this fun little experiment turned into a BIG SURPRISE!  At the end of our little experiment, our spare change added up to just over $32!  Realizing we were onto something (we discussed what a great little vacation savings fund this could be) we made this little activity part of our routine.

Every day upon coming home, we put our spare change aside and didn’t give it another thought…that is until the jar we were filling began to overflow.  To keep our idea moving along, we invested in a coin sorter.  But don’t worry…a jar will work.  You will just need to keep emptying it and putting this money elsewhere until you need it.

Well, our first vacation after implementing this idea was very easy to pull off.  We had over $300 saved up and used it for spending money and eating out while on vacation.  There was no stress in spending this money because we knew it wasn’t earmarked for other expenses.  It wasn’t like we were taking it from our checking account…it was just spare change!

After using this idea for a couple of years, I gained access to a financial calculator through our investment company and decided to put in a scenario of investing $30/month at an aggressive high yield stock fund to see what this spare change would amount to in say…30 years.  What I found was that this “little” idea turned $1/day into $67,000 in 30 years!  I know, 30 years seems like a long time, but it comes just the same.  And when it does, we’ll have an extra $67,000 and won’t even feel the effects of the investment because it’s spare change and about $1 a day!
